PARKING FOR PRESERVATION

The National Trust for Scotland has turned Pay and Display parking machines into 'Contribute and Conserve' boxes. The message conveys the principle that visitors are not paying for parking, but that the fee helps to maintain the gardens and grounds. The system reduces deficits on the maintenance of properties and has had a good response from the public. Contributions are voluntary and are increasing. The message is passed onto the visitor in the form of an information board alongside the machine. Three Metric battery operated Accent machines were installed at Glencoe as part of the scheme. Machines are also in place in Inverewe Garden, Brodie Castle, Culloden, Castle Fraser, Kellie Castle and the Moffat Valley. In England, battery and solar powered Metric machines are also used in the Lake District. Metric machines have also been adapted to allow golfers to pay-to-play and to issue fishing permits to anglers.
