COMMERCIAL AVIATION - A CANADA-UNITED STATES POST-SEPTEMBER 11TH COMPARISON
This paper examines the trends in commercial aviation in the United States and Canada before and after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. It covers the immediate or short-term impacts on the airline and airport sectors. The examination is made on both operational aspects (flights, traffic, and employment) and on financial aspects. It is apparent that while the immediate effect was quite pronounced, in many cases, declines that were evident before September 11th, have continued. As there is a very seasonal nature to air travel, the examination will primarily be done by examining year-over-year percentage changes, by comparing various indicators for a month or quarter to the same month or quarter of the previous year.
