THE PEOPLE BANNED PARKING METERS IN NORTH DAKOTA

This article presents the events leading up to and subsequent to the banning of parking meters in North Dakota. On June 29th, 1948 the people of North Dakota voted for an act that would ban parking meters. The impetus for the act was a citizen who did not like the use of parking meters in Minot, North Dakota. Nine towns that used parking meters organized a Municipal Rights Committee to launch a public information campaign, hoping act would not pass. The purpose of the campaign was to distribute information regarding the benefits of parking meters. However, the act was passed. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court, which upheld the validity of the parking meter ban in North Dakota.
