NATIONAL UNIFORMITY IN SIGNING: HOW FAR HAVE WE COME AND HOW FAR DO WE HAVE TO GO?
Session 15 at the ITE 2001 Spring Conference is entitled "Signs of the Times." It is designed to provide information about non-standard signing and what traffic engineers can learn from the non-standard signing currently seen from time to time along the roadway system. This paper presents observations about national uniformity in signing, what progress has been made towards achieving national uniformity, the reasons that non-standard signing can still be found along the roadway system and what can be learned. Uniformity in the design, placement and specification of traffic control devices is a desirable goal that promotes highway safety. Tremendous progress has been made during the past 74 years, yet, "non-standard," non-uniform signs are still being found. The Federal Highway Administration has developed the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) to aid in the development of standard uniform signs through the country.
