A CONGESTION-FREE BUS NETWORK
This paper presents bus priority as one way to increase the use of public transit. It notes that those forms of public transit that are fast and keep regular schedules, such as light rail, rate favorably with travelers. One key fact holding back the popularity of buses is that they are frequently caught in traffic jams generated by the many automobiles on the road. Traffic congestion increases air pollution and frustration; and when buses are caught in traffic jams they are held back from achieving adequate speeds and maintenance of schedules. Giving buses priority treatment in ground traffic would help increase the use of public transit, enhance bus schedule maintenance, and optimize passenger transportation capacity.
