SNOW POLE MOUNTED ROADSIDE REFLECTORS: EFFECTS ON ACCIDENT RATES

VAEGKANTSREFLEKTORER PAA SNOESTOER

The aim was to investigate whether roadside reflectors have a positive effect on traffic safety. The safety measure employed was police reported accidents. The experiment started in the winter 1973/74 and went on for 2.5 years. It was found that the number of accidents in darkness and in daylight was significantly lower where snow poles had been equipped with reflectors than when they had not. The accident prevention effect of reflectors was found to be highest on roads with speed limits of 90km/h or more, and on roads with a width of 10-13 meters. /TRRL/
