PRIVATISATION BENEFITS RAILWAY AND CUSTOMERS

In September 1993, the American company Wisconsin Central Transportation took over the loss-making New Zealand state railway, NZ Rail, to create Tranz Rail. NZ Rail is the only national rail network in the world to have been bought as a whole by one private investor. Since its privatisation, its annual operating profit has doubled, and it has become a dynamic total transport company. Its three key businesses are: (1) freight and distribution (with about 70% of total revenue); (2) rail passenger services (11%); and (3) a ferry service between New Zealand's North Island and South Island (14%). It has over 3900km of track, over which it runs over 300 locomotives and 7000 freight wagons. It has also become a multimodal transport company, specialising in logistics management, and offering its customers a total solution to their freight problems, including a door-to-door service. It has improved its transport service by providing shorter journey time and delivering on schedule. It has upgraded its locomotives and wagons, streamlined goods yards, and introduced information technology to track its freight movements and integrate its record systems. It has established a new national network management system. It has formed strategic relationships with its customers.
