THE ENVIRONMENTAL FUNCTION OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN URBAN AREAS: ON THE WAY TO A GREEN FUTURE. FINAL REPORT
DE MILIEUFUNCTIE VAN HET OPENBAAR VERVOER IN STEDELIJKE GEBIEDEN: OP WEG NAAR EEN GROENE TOEKOMST. EINDRAPPORT
The main purpose of this study is to get an insight into the present-day and future environmental function of public transport in its relationship to the car in urban areas. An analysis is made of the composition of the public transport and the car in urban areas and the use of it. Difference is made between buses, trams, underground railways and trains. Thereafter, the environmental numbers of the different transport modes are determined.Besides the environmental effects on the energy use numbers are determined for aspects of noise hindrance, environmental use and the production of waste. Public transport is on the whole more favourable from the point of view of the environment. While the use of rail transport is hardly for discussion, the bus is more sensitive for future developments of the car.
