VITAL TRAVEL STATISTICS 1997. A COMPENDIUM OF DATA AND ANALYSIS ABOUT TRANSPORT ACTIVITY IN BRITAIN

A major objective of this report is to provide information that contributes to an understanding of recent changes in transport trends and policies, and in the types of data now needed to develop, evaluate and monitor local, national and international transport policies. It aims to identify key travel-generating trends, and the major factors influencing these trends. It first examines recent trends in the volume and nature of personal travel and freight transport. It then analyses the 'components of change', to identify key areas of growth and decline; for example, it provides detailed analyses of data from several editions of the National Travel Survey (eg IRRD 868836, 875077, 883795). The emergence of a demand management approach to transport policy is discussed, covering issues such as: transport and the environment, local and wider impacts, transport energy efficiency, reducing carbon dioxide emissions from transport, measuring transport casualties and road safety, costing road accidents, and transport planning, which requires the statistics of understanding as well as the statistics of measurement. The relationship between vehicle ownership, household composition and travel behaviour is discussed. Changes in land use and population are outlined. The report's core message is that change in travel behaviour is inevitable; achieving it is the greatest challenge ever to transport policy making. The previous edition of this title was published in 1990 (IRRD 830336).
