LIFE EXPECTANCY OF STEEL FUEL CYLINDERS FOR NATURAL GAS VEHICLES

Describes a study of some 350 natural gas vehicle fuel tanks manufactured between 1980 and 1990 with a service life of up to 13 years in taxi and fleet service. The tanks were examined visually and using an immersion ultrasonic pulse-echo test system to identify manufacturing flaws. 15 cylinders were hydraulically pressure-cycled to failure, including the eight cylinders found to contain detectable flaws, in order to determine their remaining service life. The number of cycles to failure was compared to the number required by current standards. The results demonstrate the adequacy of certain provisions of the Canadian Standards Association B51-95 standard.
