REHABILITATION OF CONCRETE CRACKS BY ELECTRODEPOSITION

Electrodeposition is precipitation of material on the surface of an electrode by electrolysis. In this article the authors present the electrodeposition method as a means of repair for land-based cracked concrete structures and investigate the effects of this method on various concrete properties. They investigated the effects of electrodeposition on 100 x 100 x 200 mm (4 x 4 x 8 inches) concrete specimens with embedded reinforcing steel. Specimens were cracked under a specified load, immersed in a solution, and then a current was imparted between the embedded steel in the concrete and an electrode in the solution for 4 to 20 weeks. Afterwards, investigators examined and evaluated the weight change of the specimens, the degree of crack closure, and the amount of surface coating from the precipitation of electrodeposits. Results indicate that electrodeposits forming on the concrete surface can close concrete cracks and coat concrete surfaces.
