TYRE VIBRATIONS AND SOME ISSUES IN SUSPENSION DESIGN

The low frequency vibrations of tyres in running contact with textured road surfaces and the participation in the vibrations of suspension components are considered in this paper. It is known that a planar rigid ring tyre model is capable in respect of tyre vibration description up to 100Hz and reasonable parametric descriptions of tyres and suspension components are available. Tyre and suspension system models are combined to give a description of one vehicle corner in which the body structure is considered seismic and forced vibration responses are calculated through frequency and speed ranges for variations in system design. The forcing mechanism used consists of sinusoidal speed variations superimposed on the steady speed of the roadway. The influences of the main design variables on the vibration peaks are observed and conclusions are drawn on how the system behaviour can be controlled by fundamental design strategies.
