GLOBAL SHIFT: TRANSFORMING THE WORLD ECONOMY. THIRD EDITION

Both absolute and relative geographical changes have been, and are, occurring in the world economy; there has been a progressive shift in the center of gravity of the world system and a fundamental redrawing of the global economic map. This book explores the economic, political, and technological processes involved in this shift and identifies their major impacts on the economic well-being of communities occupying different positions within the global economic system. The book is organized in four distinct, but closely related, parts. Part I consists of a single chapter (Chapter 2) which describes the changing global map of production, trade and investment. Part II (Chapters 3 through 8) is concerned with the processes of transformation and built around the three elements of transnational corporations, nation-states and technology. Part III (Chapters 9 through 12) explores in detail the globalization process in specific sectors. The precise form of the internationalization of production, the form of global production systems and the manner in which global shifts have occurred vary substantially from one sector to another. These chapters, therefore, consist of case studies of individual sectors - textiles and clothing, automobiles, electronics and services - chosen to demonstrate some of this diversity of experience. Part IV (Chapters 13 and 14) is concerned with the stresses and strains created by global shift and with the problems facing national, regional and local economies.
