COATING SYSTEMS FOR UNDERWATER PROTECTION

The protection of structures in marine environments requires multi-coat systems which have both a passivation action and a barrier effect. The first of these, steel passivation, is often obtained by applying a primer which improves the adhesion of the other coats of the systems. Following this, coats of an efficient anti-corrosive paint must be applied. The barrier effect of the protective system is improved by using sealers (intermediate paints). The total film thickness is of primary importance, and it is determined by the service requirements. Since many sections are enclosed in offshore structures, the top coat in particular must have highly-resistant properties, depending on the characteristics of the aggressive environment. This paper describes the study of several coatings for underwater protection systems applied to a raft.
