FIRE SPREAD BY HEAT TRANSMISSION THROUGH STEEL BULKHEADS AND DECKS

The US Navy has recently conducted research to evaluate the tendency for fire spread from ship compartments after flashover. The test programme has yielded data which quantify and characterise thermal conditions in ship spaces adjacent to compartments which experience flashover. Time/temperature curves have been developed for air and steel surfaces heated by the compartment of origin. The results can assist ship designers in assessing the response of ship structures to compartment burnout and aid operators in developing effective fire-fighting doctrine and tactics.
