METAMORPHOSIS OF RRS DISCOVERY

The U.K. NERC research vessel DISCOVERY built in 1962 was reaching the end of her useful life with basic problems such as; ageing machinery, stability and deadweight which had been gradually reduced over the years, accommodation amenities below modern standards and above all scientific areas on board did not meet present needs let alone those required for future projects. After exploring all possibilities, including a newbuilding, a major conversion of the existing vessel at half the cost of a newbuilding was determined to be the best solution. The conversion was carried out at Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo in northern Portugal. General arrangement drawings are given of the vessel as built in 1962, including 1981 alterations and also following the conversion.
