AUTOMATIC HYPERBARIC WELDING FOR NORTH ALWYN PIPELINE CONNECTION

Details are given of the design, operation and commissioning of the THOR-1 automatic orbital TIG welding system for use in the North Sea. After a trial weld, a production tie-in weld was made on a 24m diameter API 5L X65 linepipe at water depth 130m. This article describes the system layout of THOR-1, which, following its successful application in the Alwyn North project in July 1986, is now considered to be fully operational. The ultimate aim of the THOR-1 programme is the development of a diverless pipeline repair and tie-in system. Work has now started on such a system which is scheduled for testing in Autumn 1988.
