STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF OVERLAPPED NODES

Tubular joints are the crucial structural elements in a space frame structure. Structural characteristics of overlapped K, YT, and KT nodes were investigated by means of numerical experiments using finite element structural analysis. The investigations were conducted from the standpoint of deformation, stress distribution stress concentration factor, load transfer mechanism, and static strength. It was found that overlapped nodes with tapered wall stubs had excellent structural characteristics compared with simple nodes. The authors propose a simple empirical formula for an axial brace force using this function, based on permissible shear stress between stubs. This can be useful in the design of stub wall thickness.
