BUSES IN URBAN TRAFFIC

BUSSAR I STADSTRAFIK. EN JAEMFOERELSE MELLAN VERKLIG TRAFIK OCH STANDARDCYKLER

A comparison has been made between 3 real urban bus cycles and established engine load and chassis dynamometer cycles. Real working ranges are dominated by following: 1) bus stationary at stop, 2) maximum acceleration. Static ECE R49 cycle is wholly dominated by load points at max torque and power. ECE R49 is not representative of urban bus cycles . Emission results for an engine with highly variable working range can be wholly misleading. The cycle must be supplemented by load point at low rpm and low torque. American transient FTP cycle agrees better with urban bus operation but it mostly simulates high and constant speed. Measurements of emission and specific consumption have been compared for the three cycles. There are large differences in emissions calculated as grammes per km. No standardised cycle gives correct NOx values. Comparison of loading patterns for Braunschweig cycle, typical urban bus cycle and the measured cycles shows appreciable differences, due probably to assumptions regarding transmission and gear change strategies.
