AUSTRALIA SELECTS A 31.5 METRE PACIFIC PATROL BOAT

The Australian Government has selected the ASI 315, an Australian Shipbuilding Industries design, for the Pacific Patrol Boat Project (part of an Australian defence programme in which other countries will co-operate). It is expected that up to ten of these boats will be built for surveillance, enforcement and other duties the contract with ASI includes, in addition to design and construction, an initial two-year support package and operational and technical training. The article, which includes information on the Project and very briefly describes the ASI 315, includes general-arrangement drawings and equipment lists. Principal particulars are:-- length 31.5 m o.a., 28.6 m w.l.; max. beam 8.1 m; full load displacement 165 tonnes; draught (deepest) 2.12 m; two Caterpillar 3516 main engines geared to twin screws; speed 20 knots (max. sustained), 12 knots (economical), 6 knots (min. sustained); range 2500 n. miles at economical speed; accommodation for complement of 17/19.
