PROPELLERS FOR SOVIET ARCTIC SHIPS: LESSONS FROM INITIAL EXPERIENCE

The SA-15 class of multipurpose cargo ships, built in Finland for the Soviet Union, are propelled by two 7,700-kW medium-speed Diesel engines, driving a KaMeWa cp propeller through elastic couplings and reduction gearing. The stainless-steel propellers have a diameter of 5.6 m and weigh 68 t. The propellers were designed for operation in ice in excess of 1 m in thickness. Experience on the lead ship MV Norilsk revealed difficulties with the pitch-control mechanism. This was traced to poor alignment of three supports for the valve actuating pin, resulting in heavy forces being required to move the pin, and consequent heavy wear. Under extreme test conditions seizure also occurred between the piston rod and bushes in the propeller hub. The remedial measures are described.
