COAL -- AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL FOR SHIP PROPULSION?

The Authors, of Hanover University, examine the technical and, more briefly, the economic and environmental factors which affect, or may affect, the use of coal as a ship-propulsion fuel, review the present state of the relevant technology <including the shipboard handling of the coal and ash>, and discuss the future possibilities of coal for this application. Experience so far with the new generation of coal-fired ships has shown that coal is a practicable fuel for these ships. However, a worldwide breakthrough of coal as an alternative fuel for ship propulsion would require an improvement in its economy, and this may be limited by the thermodynamics of the steam power-plant and other factors.
