STABILITY ANALYSIS OF PANEL METHODS FOR FREE-SURFACE FLOWS WITH FORWARD SPEED

A systematic methodology is derived for the analysis of the numerical properties of free-surface panel methods for the solution of linearized steady-state forward-speed flows. Using Fourier analysis, the consistency, order, numerical damping and dispersion, stability and enforcement of the radiation condition are studied, and the design of schemes with desirable attributes is illustrated. The stability analysis is confirmed by numerical experiments for the Kelvin source potential.
