THE TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE SINKING OF THE RO/RO FERRY EUROPEAN GATEWAY

This paper describes the technical aspects of the sinking of the EUROPEAN GATEWAY, following the report of the formal investigation into the casualty. It considers the movements of the two ships involved before and after the collision, the mechanism of the collision itself, and the reasons for the subsequent rapid heeling and sinking of the EUROPEAN GATEWAY. A new phenomenon--transient asymmetric flooding--is postulated to account in part for the rapid heeling, and the consequences of this are discussed. Improvements to ship safety are suggested to help prevent the loss of life that is possible if such an accident occurs again.
