FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS OF THE ATTERBERG LIMITS

The main purpose of the paper was to provide a better basis for understanding the physical significance of the Atterberg limits and related factors. Some simple approximations were felt to be justified by the need to obtain a first approximation. A simplified treatment of organic clays is given in the paper. Esrig presents data for an illitic clay. Kezdi presents an alternative approach to explain the relationship between Atterberg limits and soil composition. This approach is based on the melting characteristics of two and three phase systems. Attention is directed by Liu, Schmidt and Thornburn to several factors influencing the laboratory determination of Atterberg limits. An extension of the analysis for conditions where C less than C sub fv is provided by Feda.
