PILOT PROJECTS IN THE BICYCLE MASTER PLAN

A major part of the Dutch Bicycle Master Plan consists of pilot projects. These projects show how a new bicycle policy works in practice. The keywords for pilot project are: (1) integral approach; (2) organizational processes; (3) several parties; (4) initiating and implementing innovative development; (5) evaluation research; and (6) communication. This paper gives an detailed outline of: (i) the 'Faster to Schiphol Airport on your bike' plan containing several projects to promote commuter cycling; (ii) the Enschede-Oldenzaal CORridor project (COREO). Its starting point was the improvement of both bicycle facilities and the Bicycle-Public Transport link; and (iii) the 'Bicycle ferry Rhoon-Oud-Beijerland' project to considerably reduce travelling distance for cyclists in order to stimulate commuter cycling. The paper also gives a concise outline of a few other projects within the Bicycle Master Plan: (a) bicycle carousel; (b) sheltered bicycle routes; (c) coastal Zeeland project; (d) signposting for bicycle traffic; and (e) law enforcement experiment by the Amsterdam police. For the covering abstract see IRRD 860086.
