TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT ASPECTS OF LONG-SPAN THREE- HINGED MASS-CONCRETE ARCH BRIDGES ON THE M1 MOTORWAY
Masonry arch construction is considered to be structurally durable and aesthetically pleasing, especially for bridges in rural areas. This is also the finding in the Review on Roads, Bridges and Traffic in the Countryside published by the Scottish Office in 1992. Recent assessment by Acer of three hinged mass concrete arch bridges on the M1 motorway highlighted some aspects of management and technical assessment of this type of bridge. The methods available for the assessment of masonry arches are reviewed. The methods and the results of the assessment of the three hinged arch bridges are described.
