MODELLING THE MASONRY ARCH: IMPROVING MODERN BRIDGE ASSESSMENT USING NONLINEAR FINITE-ELEMENT SOFTWARE PACKAGE (MAFEA)
Current bridge assessment codes rely on rigid assumptions and the use of subjective factors to account for variations in arch design and condition. Assessments made by these standards produce results of unknown accuracy. To address these deficiencies and exploit rapid increases in computing power, a joint venture between Nottingham University (NU) and British Rail Research (BRR) has produced user- friendly non-linear Finite Element (FE) analysis programs. These have been refined by BRR to produce the fast, flexible and easy-to-use "Masonry Arch Finite Element Assessment" system (MAFEA) which offers many advantages over current arch assessment methods.
