MICROCOMPUTERS IN TRANSPORTATION. VALIDATION AND APPLICATION OF THE MODEL'S TRIP TABLE ESTIMATION PROCESS
This paper describes The Highway Emulator (THE) Model, a microcomputer based travel demand forecasting program maintained by the Central Transportation Planning Staff. Besides the conventional modeling, THE includes a feature that allows trip tables to be estimated from existing traffic counts. The trip tables estimated by the THE Model have been validated with observed trip tables for two expressways in Massachusetts. A strong correlation was demonstrated between the estimated and observed tables for each expressway. This paper describes this validation process, as well as the application of the process in a variety of studies.
