ROBOSIGN: COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN FOR ROUNDABOUTS
The paper describes the development of Robosign, a computer-aided design program for roundabouts incorporating geometrical design, performance evluation, drawing and plotting capabilities, and elements of expert systems for achieving optimum designs. A key feature of ROBOSIGN is that it is possible to impose a whole range of design standards and the program will note deviations from these. An overview is given of the design process in the United Kingdom, and the standards affecting roudabout design are discussed. The paper also describes the background to the development of ROBOSIGN and the operation of the program. A worked example of the design process is also presented. It is noted that ROBOSIGN provides a flexible and efficient tool which succeeds in improving the process of designing roundabouts; significant savings in design time can be obtained and improved designs expected.
