SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE

This article examines a test for polymer modified bitumens using Sliding Plate Rheometer to determine the stiffness modulus over a range of temperatures. This is a method which has proved itself simple and effective and which yields repeatable results. The apparatus and sample preparation are described together with the methods of measuring stiffness modulus and elastic recovery. A n of tests for elastic recovery in the temperature range 30C to -10 were carried out. Whilst these showed an excellent demonstration the effect of polymer on the properties of bitumen, the repeatabi was too low to be suitable for quality control. Stiffness modulu tests were focused on the 20C to -10C temperature range. A table results is given for the stiffness modulus at 1,000sec. A stiffn ratio is calculated by dividing the 1,000sec stiffness modulus at lower temperature by the stiffness modulus at the higher temperat A short discussion compares results for penetration grade and SBS modified bitumens. The initial results are considered to be encouraging as an indication of performance since the method is l operator sensitive and control of test conditions is better when compared with other cold temperature tests.
