GUIDELINES FOR IMPROVEMENTS TO TRANSIT ACCESSIBILITY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 establishes a clear and comprehensive prohibition of discrimination on the basis of disability. The Act requires the Secretary of Transportation to issue regulations necessary for carrying out specific parts of the Act pertaining to public transportation. The purposes of this report are to assist U.S. transit system operators in complying with the ADA and to review alternative techniques of providing accessibility for passengers with disabilities. The report: (1) examines barriers to the use of public transit by persons with disabilities; (2) provides information on techniques and devices that can improve transit access; and (3) identifies and recommends areas for research and development that may help to overcome existing barriers to accessibility.
