OREGON NOW TESTS ALL STATE HIGHWAY SIGNAL CONTROLS

The testing program was initiated in an effort to minimize failures at turn on, reduce infantile failures, prolong in-service of equipment, and assure strict conformance to contract specifications. The construction is described of a test chamber, the installation of refrigeration equipment, and the construction of the control console. The console is divided into 4 sections, each section capable of testing one eight phase controller and containing pilot light indications on all signal circuits detector test switches, 30 Amp. variable transformer for voltage variation, volt-meter and sufficient switches to test all controller inputs. Output jacks are also included for timing tests, monitor testing and chart recorders. Telephone dials accurately introduce a selected number of vehicle calls when conducting added initial tests. Additional features include load detector amplifier testing and a digital vehicle and pedestrian actuation simulator. After operation of the test facility for a year it is concluded that a possible 92 percent failure reduction was achieved. A significant reduction in maintenance calls has also been noticed.
