THIN-FILM PLASTIC AS A TEMPORARY LANDFILL COVER

The article describes the successful application of a reinforced thin-film polyethylene to address the concern about landfill contamination of surface and groundwater, and the reduction of stormwater infiltration into waste disposal sites and landfills. The approach was used at the Shotwell woodwaste landfill in Washington. The process of material selection is described, as well as design considerations. Details of the construction are described, as well as the laboratory testing of samples at the Hidden Valley landfill in Washington. Visual observations and performance reports for nearly 4 years at Hidden Valley landfill indicate that this thin-film reinforced plastic sheeting is providing an effective temporary cover.
