CHARACTERISTICS AND INTEGRATION OF UNDRAINED RESPONSE OF SILTY SOILS. NUMERICAL MODELS IN GEOMECHANICS. NUMOG III. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM HELD AT NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA, 8-11 MAY 1989

The constitutive behaviour of silt is discussed with emphasis on the undrained response. Triaxial undrained tests performed on silt show contractant behaviour at small strains but dilatant behaviour at higher strains, whereafter the soil fails. A constitutive model for silt based on elastoplasticity is proposed and investigated numerically. In addition to volumetric hardening/softening, deviatoric hardening is included and non-associated yielding is accounted for in dilatant behaviour. The closet projection method is used for integration of the constitutive relations and an iterative solution strategy is devised for resolving the incremental stress-strain relations subjected to the constraint of incompressibility.
