KINGSTON'S BOTTLENECK: ON THE WAY TO UNCORKING

With the building of Kingston's inner relief road has come a flood of development which has meant extensive work on statutory undertakings in addition to major road works. A successful idea was the setting up of a small liaison team of traffic engineers to control traffic management and consult with police, bus officials, statutory undertakers and traders. Begun in March 1986, the project is due to finish in 1989. Details are given of the redevelopment of the shopping area which is already London's third largest centre for consumer spending. Of particular interest is a new 630 space underground car park at the cattle market site with a unique foundation design more common in SE Asia. This uses secant piling interlocked by earth pressures which caused less vibration than driving steel sheet piles. Improvements include pedestrianisation of the town centre and a "shopping mobility scheme" for the disabled. (TRRL)
