SO YOU WANT TO HAVE A SNOW PLOW ROADEO...

This article discusses how to conduct a snow plow roadeo. The purpose of the roadeo is to prepare department personnel for the ensuing winter, to be a safety training exercise, to recognize the better drivers, and to publicize the skills and professionalism of the public works personnel who fight the winter storms. Getting started involves forming a committee, deciding when and where to have the roadeo, and determining what classes of equipment will be allowed to participate. Setting up the competition in a roadeo is usually accomplished by three segments: a driving test; a visual safety inspection of the vehicles; and having the operator inspect a vehicle for defects that have been preset. A drivers' briefing meeting is held on the morning of the snow plow roadeo. In 1984, the first year of the snow plow roadeo in Glastonbury, Connecticut, there were 11 municipalities with 22 contestants. In 1988, 20 municipalities and 59 drivers participated.
