EXPERT SYSTEMS. 1986 ANNUAL CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS VOLUME 2
The purpose of the study was to identify and assess the opportunities for the application of expert systems technology in urban transit and to establish the growing importance of such systems to the efficient and effective operation of transit systems. Applications were assessed in three main areas: strategic planning, operations and institutional/management. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications is undertaking a demonstration project of an expert system designed for spareboard planning. Spareboard planning, or extraboard management, is the scheduling and administration of a reserve operator force needed to handle driver absenteeism and non-scheduled runs. A thorough cost benefit analysis will be conducted when results of the demonstration are available. (TRRL)
