ANALYSIS OF SOME SKEW BRIDGES AS RIGHT BRIDGES

This is a critical review of the practice of using methods of bridge analysis that are developed for right bridges, for the analysis of skew bridges where the angle of skew is less than 20 degrees. The paper also gives a simple procedure for analyzing bridges with large angles of skew to acceptable design accuracy by means of methods originally developed for the analysis of right bridges. The procedure is intended mainly for the determination of longitudinal moments in slab-on-girder bridges. Errors in analyzing skew slab-on-girder as right are not charcterized by the angle of skew but by two dimensionless parameters, which depend upon the angle of skew, the spacing and span of girders, and their flexural rigidities relative to the flexural rigidity of the deck slab. Recomendations are given for the use of the simplified methods of analysis for skew slab-on-girder bridges.
