RECENT FIELD ADVANCES USING ACOUSTIC EMISSIONS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985

The generation of nonequilibrium noises or sounds in deforming soil and rock masses, and their subsequent monitoring, is the essence of the acoustic emission (ae) monitoring technique. The method has been used effectively in numerous laboratory studies and in the field in monitoring unstable slopes, embankments and earth dams. This two part paper extends the method into (a) the determination of preconsolidation pressures using an "acoustic pressuremeter" in soil and an "acoustic rock jack" in rock, and (b) source locating subsurface grout flow in three dimensions and in real time. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (Author/TRRL)
