RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN WINTER MAINTENANCE OF STREETS

TUTKIMUS- JA KEHITYSPANOSTA KATUJEN TALVIKUNNOSSAPITOON

Following the roads and waterways administration's investment in research and development in road maintenance, municipalities are starting an extensive investigation into street maintenance and cleansing. The purpose is to improve the productivity and economy of operations, not forgetting the effects of the level of maintenance on the national economy. The costs of the survey are about 4,5 million fim and is financed by the ministry of environmental affairs, the union of Finnish towns, the union of Finnish communes and sitra. The research program is divided into summer maintenance, winter maintenance, resources and systems and illumination. The first stage covering winter maintenance has been completed. According to the survey the winter maintenance expenses of municipalities in 1983 were about 190 million fim. Most of expenses were used for snow ploughing, anti-skid measures and removal of snow and ice. The article presents several development projects to improve the economy and efficiency of winter maintenance. (TRRL)
