DIRECTIONAL ROAD SIGNS

VAEGVISNING. SEMINARIUM UPPSALA 1981-09-14--15

It is evident that directional signposting can be improved in a number of respects. (1) Road maps should agree with the directions given on the roads. (2) Commerce and industry should be encouraged to use good road maps on advertisements. (3) Street name plates can be improved. A guidance system will not work for all individuals in all situations, due to fatigue, etc. On long journeys there is additional need for advance direction signs. An advance sign must be repeated at all junctions up to the final point. Colour coding for certain types of transport, e.g. dangerous goods, is warranted. Safety at motorway exits and junctions is increased by road signs. New regulations which apply to the whole country should be publicised in national media, those applicable locally in local media. Information in mass media should use correct terminology, locations, etc. As regards Inter-Nordic R&D, the Nordic Association of Road Engineers NVF has a coordinatory role. Even though there are differences in legislation, a long term programme on directional signposting should be initiated. NVF should set up an information centre for road engineers in all the countries. NVF should arrange discussions on R&D. Directional signposting should be properly planned. (TRRL)
