DEFORMATION OF FRESH CEMENT MORTAR CAUSED BY COMPRESSION

FRESH CEMENT MORTARS ARE COMPOSED OF SEVERAL PHASES. IF THEY HAVE REACHED A SATISFACTORY DEGREE OF COMPACTION, THEY CAN BE CONSIDERED DURING SETTING AS TWO-PHASE SYSTEMS, THE SOLID ONE. HYDRATION, WHICH TAKES PLACE CONTINUOUSLY SINCE THE BEGINNING OF MIXING, CONSTANTLY MODIFIES THE LIQUID PHASE THROUGH THE CHEMICAL BOND WITH THE WATER. THE STABILITY OF A FULLY COMPACTED CYLINDRICAL SAMPLE IS DUE TO THE FRICTION OF THE GRAINS, THE CAPILLARY TENSION AT THE SURFACE OF THE SAMPLE, AND, TO A SMALLER EXTENT, COHESION. THIS IS WHY ITS BEHAVIOUR IS SIMILAR TO THAT OF A SAMPLE COMPOSED OF ROLLED GRAINS AND WET BINDING PARTICLES. A COMPARISON BETWEEN THE RESULTS OF TESTS ON MORTAN 205 TO 380 MINUTES OLD AND PREVIOUS TESTS SHOWED THAT: CYLINDRICAL SAND AND FRESH MORTAR SAMPLES HAVE THE SAME STRESS- DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR DURING TRIAXIAL TESTS.
