FREIGHT TRANSPORT BY ROAD. REPORT FROM A SEMINAR

This report reviews important research fields in goods transport by road. Traffic and transport policy research deals with competition between different modes, prediction of goods transport development, international transport, licensing, environmentally hazardous goods, drivers' working environment, transport systems and materials handling, goods distribution and parcel traffic, computerisation, vehicle technology and safety, vehicle weights, energy use. Future research tasks for the road and traffic research institute are the cost structure of road traffic, road wear and other environmental costs due to road traffic, transport demand and road traffic, materials handling and transport systems, transport of environmentally hazardous goods, computerisation. This research should be carried out in collaboration with the universities. Papers presented at the seminar were: (1) the role of the transport council in road transport research, (2) research by the transport research commission and industry's R&D needs, (3) the role of the transport research delegation in research, (4) logistics programme planned by Swedish board for technical development, (5) goods transport research at Linkoeping Institute of Technology. There was a discussion of future research in the field of road transport. (TRRL)
