ROAD ACCIDENT RESEARCH, SAAB 99. THE RESULTS OF A FIVE-YEAR SURVEY

TRAFIKOLYCKSFORSKNING, SAAB 99. RESULTATET AV EN FEMAARSUNDERSOEKNING

Originally, the lower cutoff figure for accident repair costs was sek 6500, but this increased with inflation. Only accidents south of a line which delineates the part of Sweden with 85% of the population, have been included. On the basis of these limitations, the number of investigated accidents is about 6% of all cases of damage to saab 99 cars which exceeded the insurance excess. Supplementary random tests show that accidents with repair costs below the sampling limit produced injuries to those travelling in Saab cars in only 1-2% of cases. This report gives the results of five 12-month periods, relating to a total of 857 cars and 1514 vehicle occupants. It is considered that these results are largely applicable to Saab 900 also. Head-on collisions are twice as common (49%) as sideways collisions. To those wearing seat belts, steering columns caused 34 injuries, instrument panels 26, roof members 16 (2 serious), door panels 35 (3 serious), side windows 14, seats 16 (2 serious), other passengers 11 (6 serious), and seat belts 89 (5 serious). Light injuries caused by belts would have been serious injuries if no belts had been worn. (TRRL)
