HANDLING CHARACTERISTICS OF HEAVY VEHICLE COMBINATIONS AT CONSTANT SPEED. FINAL REPORT

TUNGA FORDONSKOMBINATIONERS MANOEVEREGENSKAPER VID KONSTANT HASTIGHET. SLUTRAPPORT

This investigation concerning handling characteristics of heavy vehicle combinations consists of studies of geometric space requirements at sharp low speed turns and dynamic stability at high speed manoevres. The objective was to develop test methods and to propose performance requirements and check procedures that could be used for vehicle combination compatability approval of trucks and trailers. The following test methods have been developed and are described in the report: 1) double lane change manoevre at 70 km/h with full load 2) static overturning tests with full load 3) low speed kinematic circular off-tracking test 4) dynamic off-tracking test at 70 km/h with full load. Proposals are given concerning performance requirements on yaw stability, overturning limit, lateral deviation and skidding risk amplification rearwards in the vehicle combination. (Author/TRRL)
