SPEED LIMITATION 110-90 KM/H, 1979-06 - 1979-10. COMPARISON OF OCCURRED ACCIDENTS

HASTIGHETSBEGRAENSNING 110-90, 1979-06 - 1979-10. JAEMFOERELSE AV OLYCKSUTVECKLING

With the aim of saving fuel the maximum speed limit was lowered from 110 to 90 km/h on the largest roads in Sweden. This was only during a limited period, four months in the summer of 1979. The aim of this evaluation was to investigate if this speed reduction resulted in a lower rate of road accidents. The number of occurred accidents during this period on the 110 km/h roads was compared with occurred accidents on roads that have always had the speed limit of 90 km/h. The 90 km/h roads chosen were as similar as possible to the 110 km/h roads. The result was approximately 9 per cent fewer accidents. The kind of accidents that were reduced were the most severe ones.
