HAY FEVER PATIENTS AT THE WHEEL

HEUSCHNUPFENPATIENTEN AM STEUER

The symptomatic treatment of hay fever with an antihistamine has been greatly reduced due to sedating side-effects. Without sufficient medical treatment, however, hay fever lessens the ability to concentrate. In order to test the performance behaviour under the effect of antihistamines, 20 healthy subjects received 12 mg carbinoxamine, 50 mg diphenhydramine and placebo. Immediately before and 2 hours after taking the drugs the participants underwent traffic- and performance-psychological tests. The direct comparison of the 3 batches by means of multiple rank variance analysis resulted in hardly any practical difference. In contrast, the effect of the diphenhydramine in the pratt-tests stood out partly significantly, partly as a conforming tendency. After receiving the diphenhydramine the following signs of tiredness exhibited themselves: increased reaction time, sinking flicker coalescence frequency, relaxed visuomotoric coordination on the "pursuit rotor", more unfavourable self-assessment of ability to concentrate, increase of subjective tiredness in the "rating scales" and the "adjective check list", diminution of tension and nervousness. After the receipt of the carbinoxamine by the same test group the results were non-directional and indeed similar to, if not quite so favourable, as after taking the placebo. (TRRL)
