MECHANISM OF NITRITE INHIBITION OF CHLORIDE ATTACK ON REINFORCING STEEL IN ALKALINE AQUEOUS ENVIRONMENTS

Calcium nitrite effectively inhibits corrosion of steel reinforcing bars by chlorides. Polarization curves were made of steel bars in aqueous solutions of varying compositions of Na chloride and Ca nitrite plus Ca hydroxide. Precipitation experiments were conducted with solutions containing Ca chloride, ferrous sulfate, and triethanolamine. Ca nitrite delayed onset of attack when Na chloride was added. Mechanism of attack by chloride ion is discussed. The nitrite ion oxidizes ferrous ions to ferric and thus blocks passage of ferrous ions from the steel.
