A CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR CODIFYING STRUCTURAL STEELWORK COMPONENTS-DEVELOPMENT AND DESCRIPTION OF THE SYSTEM

In this first part of a two-part report from the Technische Hochschule, Aschen, the Authors list the objectives of a classification system for codifying the various flat and section parts, and certain other material, used in steel constructional work (ship and other marine structures are not specifically mentioned). The principles and framework of such a system, developed at the Technische Hochschule in collaboration with industry and forming part of a more comprehensive classification system, are then described and discussed in detail. It is mentioned that the VDW classification system, developed for use in mechanical engineering, has proved to be a valuable tool in the rationalising of design, production planning, and production, and experience with it has been a useful basis for the development of this system of classifying structural parts.
